The Kobe International Flute Competition was started in order to provide young, promising flutists in the world with an opportunity to be launched onto the international stage, as well as to enhance international exchange and friendship through music. The first competition was held as a cultural event in August, 1985, the same year the Kobe Universiade was held, intending that it be passed down through the ages. Since its inception, it has been held every four years and is the only regular international competition exclusively for flute in the world.
The competition also officially became a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions on April 25, 1987, and has been recognized as one of the most definitive competitions.
Past prize winners, including Emmanuel Pahud and Emily Beynon, are now leading players in the international flute circle, which contributes to the competition's winning high acceptance as a gateway to success in the international music arena.

The 6th Kobe International Flute Competition was held in August 2005, the tenth year after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, as one of the "Message from Kobe: Tenth Anniversary of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake" projects, and also as part of the "Flute Festival" along with other various related events.
The 6th competition received 213 applications from many countries (36 countries and one region) and 59 who had passed the qualifying audition (from 21 countries and one region; 17 of whom were Japanese) participated in the first round. Among them, 24 competitors (from 11 countries) proceeded to the second round, 13 (from seven countries) advanced to the third round, and then seven finalists (from three countries; four of whom were Japanese) were chosen to perform in the final round. Their performances demonstrated during the 9-day competition were wonderful and superb, and did not allow easy ranking. It was especially difficult to decide the ranking in the second and third rounds because the performance level was so high and the standard so even, and as a result more than the scheduled number of semifinalists and finalists were chosen. In the final, the juries found it very difficult to decide the prize winners and the announcement of the result was delayed by almost one hour. The final decision was exceptional; Two first prize winners, two third prize winners, and two sixth prize winners were chosen (as follows). It was the first time in 20 years to have Japanese top prize winners since the 1st Kobe competition where Yumiko Sakuma (a member of juries for the 6th competition) came second. Yuki Koyama, who shared the first prize with Andrea Oliva from Italy, was the first Japanese first prize winner, as well as the youngest top prize winner of this competition in its history.
