Now in its 25th edition, this major steelpan event—featuring percussion instruments made from steel drums—brings together steel orchestras and bands from across Japan. As the largest steelpan gathering in western Japan, this year, it will also welcome world-renowned guest artists Andy Narell and Anita Bonan .
The event has its roots in a 2001 initiative launched as part of the “21st Century Reconstruction Project,” held in gratitude for the support Kobe received during the aftermath of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. Through this initiative, an orchestra called FANTASTICS was formed by local residents and shopkeepers from affected areas—most of whom had no previous musical experience—under the guidance of professional instructors.
Evolving from this project, the Asta Shin-Nagata Steelpan Promotion Association —the organizing body of the carnival—was established, led by members of the FANTASTICS orchestra. The association aims to inspire hope through the vibrant, uplifting, and powerful sounds of steelpan music, promoting cultural revitalization, community rebuilding, and the creation of new local traditions.
Designated as part of the 30th anniversary commemorations of the earthquake, the KOBE International Music Festival 2025 will conclude with a fitting grand finale: the 25th KOBE Steelpan Carnival 2025.
