A hilarious and poignant story that feels surprisingly modern?despite being written over 400 years ago!
“L’Ospedale” is a 17th-century Italian musical satire that was revived and given its Japanese premiere in Tokyo in September 2023 by the vocal ensemble La Fonteverde, led by soprano Midori Suzuki, a native of Kobe. The anonymous score, discovered in a Venetian library by musicologist Naomi Matsumoto, was brought to life in a concert-style performance that captivated audiences. With its beautiful melodies and a storyline that resonates even today, this performance garnered significant acclaim.
The upcoming performance will take place at one of Kobe’s premier concert halls, located by the harbor. Renowned vocalists familiar with period performance practices will appear alongside a formidable instrumental ensemble, led by cellist Hidemi Suzuki. Together, they bring to life a one-hour musical drama that promises to be both uproarious and enlightening. Additionally, there will be a talk session featuring those who discovered and edited the score.
